Rosary Walk places and contemplative locations:
If you have followed @onehailmaryatatime or @manyhailmarysatatime you know we are big fans of a walking rosary. Therefore I have collected places, retreats, hikes, trails, various locations where you can walk and pray the rosary for Our Lady’s intercession.
A rosary walk offers us a beautiful, meditative journey, drawing us into a deeper walk with the Lord under Mary’s guidance. This is a treasure, accompanied in God’s glorious creation with nature, that transforms the eyes and heart.
Benefits of walking and Rosary meditation:
Moving the body helps calm the mind: Walking adds our physiology, which helps engage body and mind together. Move the body, mind will follow. This can be particularly helpful for people who find it challenging to sit still for extended periods. Or some of us spend most of our days sitting and working in front of a computer, therefore adding movement with prayer is effective for mind body soul connection. The rhythm of walking can create a sense of flow making it easier to meditate on the mysteries of the rosary.
Will reduce stress and anxiety: Walking is an excellent form of physical activity for all and it has been proven it can reduce stress and anxiety levels. As we walk, our bodies release endorphins, which improve mood and promote relaxation. This also makes it easier to reach a state of calm.
Being with nature is healing: Walking, especially in nature, allows us to marvel at and soak in the beauty of God’s creation. Nature also provides a space without distractions, where we can step in wonder with the Holy Spirit to the sights, sounds and rays of the sun. The environment offers a sensory rich experience with attention to the details of visual and auditory beauty making the rosary a rich invitation of experience.
Improves concentration: Movement helps clear the mind of distracting thoughts and allow for deeper contemplation. It encourages the practice of being fully present and engaged with the current moment. By focusing on the sensation of each step, the rhythm of breathing, and the surrounding environment, walking helps cultivate a contemplative awareness that is central to meditating on the mysteries.
Balances and restores energy levels: For some people, sitting or being still can lead to restlessness or greater fatigue because our body has been deprived of movement. When we engage and move the body, it will improve our health, help us to stay alert and be engaged without feeling restless.
St. Augustine is often quoted on the subject of prayer, but a specific quote on walking and prayer is less direct. A quote that can be adapted to the idea of walking and prayer comes from his "Letters," particularly Letter 130 to Proba:
"Do not go outside yourself, but enter into your own soul; for truth dwells in the inner man. And if you find that your nature is changeable, transcend yourself. But remember, when you transcend yourself, you are transcending a soul that reasons. Reach, therefore, to where the light of reason is kindled."
While this isn't directly about walking, it suggests an introspective journey akin to walking in prayer.
Additionally, a more relevant quote often attributed to Augustine, although its exact source within his works is unclear, is:
"Solvitur ambulando," meaning "It is solved by walking."
This phrase encapsulates the idea that walking can lead to clarity and deeper prayerful contemplation.
